How it all began

This is an account of my efforts to shed light on some of my family’s past. It all started when I found a little card in my late mother’s house announcing the death of my grandfather in The Great War. From the date I was able to find out what happened to him. I thought his story should be told, and not only his, but many other characters who emerged as I dug into the records of the past.

My parents, Fred Barber and Doris Smiles, married and settled in Gilbert Street, just off Hertford Road, Enfield Wash. This is where my sister Wendy and I were raised.

With thanks to The Enfield Society for permission to use this photograph of Enfield Wash in about 1930.
